Born in 1937, in Spencerport, New York, William pursued his education at Syracuse University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, from which he graduated Magna Cum Laude. Following his academic achievements, he served his country with honor in the United States Army from 1958 to 1960, stationed at Arlington Hall. William then worked for the New York Central Railroad before moving to San Diego, where he worked as an appraiser for the Federal Housing Administration, where he developed a passion for real estate.
Beyond his career, William had a deep passion for aviation. He was a Certified Flight Instructor for many years, and was a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, sharing his knowledge and love of flying with others.
Known as “Will-Bill” to his friends, William supported the “Friends of Bill W” during the last 56 years of his life, helping many maintain sobriety.
William is survived by his sons Daniel (Sandy) and David (Lori), six grandchildren Justin (Kassia), Jessica Grenot (Peter), Matthew (Kirsten), Jennifer, Rebecca McGovern (Ian), and Steven (Emily) as well as eight great-grandchildren, who carry forward his legacy.
William was preceded in death by his father Herman Joseph Hilsdorf and mother Clara Mildred Flack (Nemetz), his first wife Margaret (Meyer, two children) and second wife Nancy (Parker, no children.
He held a belief in a power greater than himself—a quiet testament to the values that guided him throughout life.
