Billie (Bill) Lee Hogan was born on September 23, 1946 and passed away October 1, 2026 at the age of 80 at home surrounded by family after having a stroke the week before.
Bill was born in Truman, AR in 1946 and moved around for his father’s work. After graduating from Wyandotte High School (Kansas City, KS) in 1964, he entered the Army and studied Russian at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA. After studying Vietnamese, he did one tour in Vietnam in 1969/1970. Over his 27 year Army career, he had multiple duty stations to include:
• 12th USASA Field Station in Chitose, Japan
• Fort Meade, Maryland
• Two tours in Augsburg, Germany where he was a founding member of the USASA Augsburg Field Station.
• Wurzburg, Germany
• Goodfellow Air Force Base, Texas
• Numerous tours at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA.
He learned multiple languages over his career and took great pride in his work. Upon retiring from the Army in 1991, he become a civilian working for DLI and later the Naval Post Graduate School as a network architect. He finally fully retired in 2008.
Bill met and married Charlene (O’Donovan) Hogan while stationed at DLI. They were married in the DLI chapel on October 4, 1968. They were married for almost 58 years and loved traveling the world together. They had one daughter, Erin (Hogan) Boyd. The family joke is that Bill only allowed Erin to marry her husband, Greg, because he was also in military intelligence in the Army and could “talk shop” with Bill. One of Bill’s favorite pastimes was spending time with his two grandsons, Liam and Bee. He was known to brag about his family member’s accomplishments to anyone that would listen and was extremely proud of them. Bill loved woodworking, reading, and watching the History Channel.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar Lee Hogan and Geradine (Williams) Hogan. He leaves his wife, Charlene (Charlie) Hogan of Marina, CA; their daughter, Erin (Hogan) Boyd and her husband, Greg Boyd of Salinas, CA and their children, Liam and Bee; his brother, Richard Hogan of Blue Springs, MO and two sisters, Kathleen Hogan and Kay Hogan of Fort Smith, AR.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, November 13, 2026 at the California Central Coast Veterans Cemetery in Seaside, CA (2900 Parker Flats Road). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill’s memory to any veterans organization of your choosing.
