James Gordon Kimball

Jim's love for California's natural beauty was sparked by time spent with grandparents Ernest and Edna Robinson Cleary on their land which would later become Cleary Reserve - a 430 acre wilderness dedicated to wildlife preservation and scientific research.

He eventually moved to the Redwood forests of Big Sur where he lived for over 40 years. Jim worked at Pacific Valley School and spent free time volunteering with the fire department. Passionate about wildfire prevention and maintenance, Jim served as a radio operator for the Big Sur Volunteer Fire Brigade. He also operated his own website providing updates on local fire conditions, hazards and community events.

Though Jim eventually moved to Elkhorn, he never forgot the beloved "Snake Rock" property where he spent 4 decades of his life. The land remains as part of the Los Padres National Forest and his ashes are tentatively scheduled to be scattered there on April 5th, 2026. Details will be forthcoming for family and friends interested in attending or memorializing him.

Jim is survived by granddaughter Katalina as well as by siblings Kathy, Steve and Kristin. He was preceded in death by brother John and daughter Catherine.
