James Edward Shortt

James Edward Shortt, beloved resident of Seaside, California, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at the age of 72. He was born on May 25, 1954, in Stockton, California, and spent his life leaving a lasting impression on all who were fortunate enough to know him.

James graduated from Seaside High School in 1972, beginning his journey as a young man rooted in the community he would continue to serve and cherish throughout his life.

Those who knew James remember him as a kind and generous soul — a man who was always willing to lend a hand, give his time freely, and love deeply. For 42 years, he shared his life with his devoted partner, Susan Watts, a bond that stood as one of the greatest joys and anchors of his life.

James dedicated 35 years of faithful service to the City of Marina in Public Works, a testament to his commitment, dependability, and quiet pride in contributing to his community.

Beyond his work, James was a man of rich passions. His love of baseball ran deep — he played on several local leagues and teams, including the Monterey Peninsula Angels and the Seaside Bombers, and he treasured an ever-growing collection of memorabilia, each piece carrying with it a story he held dear. His adventurous spirit led him to the skies through hang gliding and aviation, ultimately earning his pilot's license — a proud achievement that reflected his lifelong sense of wonder.

Music, however, may have been the truest expression of who James was. He played the drums every single day, performed at local shows with his bandmates, and found in music a joy he was always eager to share with others. The rhythm he brought to a room was much like the rhythm he brought to life — steady, spirited, and full of heart.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Shortt and Doris Zanutto. He is lovingly survived by his daughter, Christine Shortt.

James will be profoundly missed by his family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by his warmth and generosity. His memory will endure in the music he made, the passions he shared, and the love he gave so freely.
