John Leonard Crawley

John graduated from the University of Toronto in 1958 with a degree in mechanical engineering and received his MBA from California State University Los Angeles in 1970. He became a U.S. citizen in 1990.

John had a long and successful career in business, rising as a management executive and holding key leadership positions at several companies in Canada and the United States, primarily in the cement industry. He held various management positions for several decades with Genstar Corporation, retired as president of St. Mary’s Cement Co. in Toronto, Canada, and moved to Monterey in 1997.

Growing up in Port Colborne, Ontario, John was actively involved in scouting and Sea and Army Cadets as a boy. Starting on frozen backyard ponds, through university and adult recreational teams, John loved playing hockey, only hanging up his skates in his sixties. He was an avid military historian and a cherished family genealogist, having researched and written detailed histories of both his and his wife’s families. He enjoyed playing the piano throughout his life.

John is preceded in death by his parents, James Leonard and Kate Elizabeth (MacMurchy) Crawley, and four brothers, Donald, Paul, David, and Charles.

He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Lily (Irene Lillian Bartok), children Pamela Yeager (Kurt) and Jason Crawley (Deb), and grandchildren John and Kathryn Yeager, and Clare and Nolan Crawley.

John loved his family and was especially proud of his grandchildren, taking them on vacations and supporting them in all their extracurricular activities (music, sports, underwater robotics). He also enjoyed gardening, landscaping, and hosting the family dinners and holiday gatherings. He will be deeply missed by his family.
