Mauricio Lee Canchola, age 69, of Costa Mesa, California, passed away peacefully on June 11, 2025, attended to by his loved ones.
Mauricio was born in Costa Mesa, California, to Filomeno and Claudia Canchola. He graduated from Estancia High School. He went on to work in a wide variety of jobs. He sold spices for El Mexicano, bread for Weber’s, furniture for Ethan Allen, telephone systems for Motorola, and even specialty drinks for Starbucks. One time his partner, John Munsee, asked him why he regularly jumped from job to job, and he responded, “I won’t stay in a job if I don’t get to meet people and socialize every day.” John followed up with this question: “Don’t you care about making money?” Mauricio answered, “I don’t care about money. It doesn’t mean that much to me.”
Bolstered by his success decorating rooms for his clients at Ethan Allan, he volunteered to be the gallery manager for Sol Treasures, an arts hub in King City. He successfully procured artists in Monterey County and beyond to display their works in this gallery.
Mauricio was a devoted partner, protector, and promoter of his partner of 43 years. He met John Munsee in Long Beach, California when they were both 26 years old. Mauricio followed John from Long Beach, to Salinas, and then to King City as they tried to improve their living situation. Mauricio and John made King City their home for thirty-five years.
Mauricio had a passion for showing Afghan hounds, decorating his homes, cooking, entertaining, remembering his friends from childhood, and staying connected with his brother and many relations. He will be remembered for his warm personality, gentle nature, and unwavering dedication to those he loved.
Mauricio is survived by his youngest sibling, Mark Canchola, and many nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends.
A celebration of life has not been scheduled at this time. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to South County Animal Rescue (SCAR) in Soledad, California.
