

He graduated from San Francisco State University in 1962 and the Southern California School of Theology in June of 1967 (earning a master's degree) and another master's degree in Public Administration from California State University Stanislaus.
Ray worked as a Methodist Minister and later as a Systems Analyst for the county of Stanislaus.
He was actively involved in music (oboe, choirs), folk dancing with his wife (Dori), and was a voracious reader of Fantasy/Science Fiction. Ray was known for his sense of humor with a compulsive affinity for puns.
Ray was preceded in death by parents Ruth Bartlett McElroy and George Randolph McElroy as well as a sister and a brother.
He is survived by his wife, Dori McElroy, and children Stephen and Richard as well as he grandchildren, Molly and William.
